Artist Statement

After the pandemic years of illness, death and world upheaval, many found themselves broken, tender, and irrevocably changed. Some found new perspectives from this arduous time: feeling more grateful, more global in perspective, more kind.
Enlightened in some ways by the pandemic, we emerged like the ancient Buddhist symbol of the lotus flower, which from muddy water blooms beautiful.
BLUE LOTUS

This sculptural installation consists of seven blue lotus flowers created from encaustic and disposable face masks. During the pandemic, these blue facial coverings became ubiquitous, protecting us from germs as we fearfully, occasionally emerged from our isolated lives. These masks are also harsh symbols of political difference, violence, low-wage overseas labour and littered streets and landfills.
Blue Lotus metamorphizes surgical masks into a pond of floating lotus flowers - symbols of peace, rebirth, self- and community-regeneration, and global enlightenment.

METAMORPHOSIS - ABOUT FACE
All nature, beings, and things are subject to change. Cycles of birth to death, wellness to disease, wholeness to brokenness – indeed life itself is a changing process of transformation, transfiguration - Metamorphosis.
During the challenging Covid pandemic years we underwent personal, cultural and global metamorphoses. Irrevocably changed, we emerged, hopeful and ready for rebirth.
Metamorphosis transforms blue surgical masks into a garden of nine blooming flowers -like butterflies taking to the air: a symbol of peace, rebirth and regeneration.
Medium:
What better material with which to create art about life than encaustic? Beeswax and tree resin: elements which emerge from nature - transformed.
